Heritage Farm-A step back in time
Since you can’t time travel the next best thing is a trip to Heritage Farm. When you visit Heritage Farm it’s like spending a day in the 1800s. The grounds contain a collection of 22 buildings from 1750-1900. All are fully furnished with period appointments. There is a blacksmith’s shop, general store, one room school house, church, several log homes and much more. There are also collections of farm equipment, tools, machinery, cars, wagons and even an operational saw mill. But that’s just the beginning. In addition to coming for a visit, you can also have your wedding here, your family reunion or stay overnight at one of the inns on the grounds. The Exhibition Coal Mine
A great place to learn about coal mining. You can travel into an underground coal mine and see how coal was mined throughout history. You can visit a period company story, see the company houses that miners lived in and get a sense of what life was like for a coal miner in the 20th Century. This destination is filled with artifacts, information and things to see. If you’re interested in coal mining this is one stop you don’t want to miss.
West Virginia Cultural Center and Museum
The West Virginia Cultural Center and Museum is filled with many fascinating exhibits that cover history, arts, crafts, sports, industry and much more. Some highlights include a quilt exhibit, a walk through a coal mine, fine art displays, art glass, Civil War exhibits, geology and archeology exhibits and so much more. A day’s worth of entertainment and information and it’s all free.
The Country Music Highway
A paradise for country music fans If you love country music then the Country Music Highway is something you don’t want to miss. Amazingly many of the biggest names in country music history grew up along the same stretch of road. These artists include the original Coal Miner’s Daughter – Loretta Lynn, Miley Cyrus, Bill Ray Cyrus, Dwight Yokam, The Judds, Ricky Skaggs, Crystal Gail, Patty Loveless and more. So if you want to learn about these country music legends and see how and where they grew up then you’ve got to visit the Country Music Highway.
